Iridium is a rare and hard transition metal discovered at the beginning of the 19th century and named after the Greek goddess of rainbow, Iris. This metal is not reactive and has quite high density. It produces salts of various bright colors. It has no importance to the living organisms and in very small amounts can be extracted from its chemical compounds, mainly with nickel. It was also discovered that asteroids and meteors are quite rich in iridium. This chemical element is known as the most corrosion resistive metal. Its applications are not numerous; this chemical element is used in alloys with other metals in producing spark plugs, compass bearings, special meter bars, etc.
